Poaching the Walled Garden of Facebook

Workers in the Garden

Facebook is an attractive page, and for obvious reasons who would publish their headshot on Facebook if it weren’t for an efficient moderation system that keeps it pruned and clean. It’s also the number two website on the Internet according to Alexa Rank, and is arguably the most successful social network on the Internet.

Facebook can also be an attractive marketing channel to promote a service or sell a product. In fact if you buy traffic from Facebook the results can be top notch as Facebook is first and foremost a data mining company. They know a good many things about their users and you can leverage that data in your ad campaign.

Unfortunately the ad rates come at a premium price, however you can still grab traffic from Facebook the Old Fashioned Way, which is through your social circle. It’s also possible to run your existing mailing list through a Facebook profile and find out if some of your clients prefer to interact on Facebook instead of email.

As you build your “friend list”, post links to articles on your blog along with photos, videos and items of interest. Leverage the fact that you live in some place interesting like Costa Rica. In fact many people start to promote their ideas or service on Facebook before ever developing their own webpage or blog.

Facebook is actually a little easier to use than many blog systems and even a modest Internet user can get results quickly. Just be careful not to post repetitive, boring or irrelevant content, and avoid trying to connect with people unless you have a friend in common or some kind of mutual interest.

If you don’t have a Facebook profile and want to create one in order to promote your blog there is some good news, which is to say if you have used the same email address for years, then chances are you can quickly attract a sizable group on Facebook. The key here is to use that old email address because Facebook will be able to import your email contacts, and connect you to these potential friends.

Facebook is a powerful social network for connecting with other Americans living in or interested in coming to Costa Rica,
however is not the only social network on the block. If you have already launched a blog, then be sure to connect with Twitter and setup an Opt-In Email Subscription.
